What is allergic rhinitis?

The short, honest version: your immune system overreacts to a harmless substance in the air, and your nose pays the price. It is incredibly common — and very manageable.

Definition Allergic rhinitis — often called hay fever — is an inflammation of the lining of the nose caused by an allergic immune response to airborne particles such as pollen, dust-mite droppings, pet dander or mould spores.

What happens inside your body

When you breathe in an allergen you are sensitised to, your immune system treats it like an invader and launches a response:

  1. RecognitionImmune cells make allergy antibodies (IgE) specific to that allergen, like a wanted poster for pollen.
  2. TriggerThe next time the allergen arrives, it binds to IgE sitting on mast cells in your nasal lining.
  3. ReleaseMast cells burst open and release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals.
  4. SymptomsHistamine makes small blood vessels leak, glands produce mucus, and nerves fire — giving you sneezing, a runny nose, itching and congestion.

There is also a slower "late phase" over the following hours, in which inflammatory cells move into the nose and keep symptoms going. That is why daily preventive treatments work better than occasional ones.

Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis

Seasonal (hay fever)

Symptoms appear at the same time every year, driven by outdoor allergens: tree pollen in spring, grass pollen in early summer, weed pollen in late summer and autumn. In mild climates it can span most of the year.

Perennial (year-round)

Symptoms continue through the year, usually because of indoor allergens — dust mites in bedding and carpets, pet dander, mould, or cockroach allergens. Many people have both patterns.

Intermittent vs persistent Guidelines also group rhinitis by duration: intermittent means symptoms on fewer than 4 days a week or for less than 4 weeks; persistent means the opposite. This helps your clinician choose treatment.

How common is it really?

More than 400 million people worldwide live with allergic rhinitis — roughly 10–30% of adults and up to 40% of children. It is one of the most common chronic conditions on the planet. Most people first develop symptoms before the age of 20, and the condition often runs in families alongside eczema and asthma.

Why it matters more than you might think

  • It is linked to asthma. The nose and lungs form one airway — allergic rhinitis is a well-established risk factor for developing asthma, and treating the nose helps the lungs.
  • It steals sleep and focus. Congestion disrupts sleep; daytime drowsiness and poor concentration are common complaints at school and work.
  • It drives other problems. Chronic inflammation can lead to sinus infections, and in children to middle-ear infections.

The good news

Allergic rhinitis is one of the most treatable chronic conditions. Allergen avoidance, simple nasal hygiene, effective first-line medications and — for persistent cases — immunotherapy can bring most people significant relief. You do not have to live with it.
